Description |
Wistar rats were given a diet deficient in vitamin A without or with retinyl acetate by mouth 2000 IU weekly or retinoic acid 28 mug daily. A fourth group had a diet with only 5% protein with the retinyl acetate supplement as before. The rats were killed at intervals of 10 to 15 days. Sections of tongue showed that vitamin A deprivation resulted in the gradual atrophy of the circumvallate papilla consisting of the taste buds. This was prevented in rats given retinyl acetate or retinoic acid. Rats given the diet low in protein had intact taste buds despite poor growth.
