Description The principal organic acid present in Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind) has been identified as (-)-hydroxycitric acid (HCA). An HPLC method for determination of HCA and other organic acids in the fruit is described. G. cambogia rinds are extracted with water, and proteinaceous material is removed from the decolorized extract by treatment with ethanol. HPLC analysis is performed on a Bondapack C18 column eluted with 10mM sulphuric acid and with UV detection at 214 nm. HCA contents of G. cambogia were 16.0-18.0%. Values obtained using conventional acid-base titration were higher than those found by the HPLC technique due to the presence of other acids, of which 2 out of 4 were identified as citric and malic acid.
