Description The pseudospectral method can be considered to be a spectral method that performs a collocation process. As the formulation is straightforward and robust enough to produce approximate solutions close to exact solutions, this method has been highly successful in many areas such as turbulence modelling, weather prediction and non-linear waves. Even though this method can be used for the solution of structural mechanics problems, it has been largely unnoticed by structural mechanics researchers, and few articles are available where the pseudospectral method has been applied. From the literature, it has been observed that the use of the Chebyshev Pseudospectral Element Method (CPEM) has been quite limited in the fields of structural mechanics. In CPEM [1], Chebyshev polynomials are used as the basis/interpolation functions and Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobato points are used as grid points. The usefulness of the pseudospectral method in the solution of structural mechanics problems has been demonstrated in a static analysis of the L-shaped Reissner–Mindlin plate [2]. In structural mechanics, one of the great challenges is mesh distortion problems. Distorted elements produce relatively poor results. Distorted meshes can slow down the convergence of the solutions and may give inaccurate results. Distorted meshes are unavoidable when we analyse complex structures. The distortion sensitivity of the CPEM is not yet completely studied in the available literature. The present work is an attempt to fill this void. The static analysis of CPEM is carried out to analyse the mesh distortion sensitivity.
