Description This paper deals with the methodology and significance of calibration and validation of a water quality model for its meaningful application with a sample set of results. Water quality simulation was performed for different state variables (BOD, TKN, DO). Approximately 20-Km stretch of Tapi estuary was selected as modelling domain for the study purpose at Hazira-Kawas region, a highly industrialized zone. A dynamic water quality model (WASP3) was calibrated and validated against measured field data collected at different time intervals. Performance of the calibrated model was evaluated through statistical techniques to quantify the degree of predictive accuracy of the model. The performance of the model was excellent for hydrodynamic compartment part of the model and fairly good for the process compartment part of the model.
