Description Water is one of the most valuable natural resources and fundamental to economic development and quality of life. Sprawling urbanization and increased industrial activities in Delhi are of serious concern and is exerting enormous pressure on Delhi's water resource. Increasing Areal extent of impermeable built up areas have resulted in reduced infiltration and shrinking water table. the issue of water security both in quantity and quality is central to the sustainable development of Delhi. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of water resource in the region vis-a-vis present and projected consumption pattern and various sources of pollution throught state-of-the-art modelling and simulation is an important component of the study that would help to manage and mitigate the problem of water crisis. Indiscriminate disposal of hazardous waste, application of pesticides, unlined and poorly maintained surface impoundments thousands of poorly constructed septic tanks, contaminated river water intrusion into fresh water aquifers are some of the major factors responsible for shrinking freshwater resource. A status report of Central Pollution Control Board (1996) indicated that, groundwater in the Delhi region is contaminated with heavy metals and coliforms. Chemical spills, large number of underground storage of petroleum products have further complicated the problem of groundwater management and protection in big cities like Delhi. Once Groundwater is contaminated, it is technologically too complex and economically prohibitive to remediate and restore it to its pristine state. Such options are extremely difficult if not impossible for a country like India due to scarce resources.
