Description The inhibitory effect of ammonium on nitrate uptake, which has received a fair amount of attention, is an example of phytoplankton uptake kinetics in a multinutrient environment with nutrient interaction. We examine the effect of five relations (Wroblewki, 1977; O'Neill et al., 1989; Walsh & Dugdale, 1971; Frost&Frenzen,1992; Yajnik& Sharada, 2002) governing the uptake of nitrate and ammonium by phytoplankton on the state variables of a seven-component ecosystem model is evaluated by using US JGOFS data and buoy data. While this investigation did not clearly identify the most appropriate model of nitrogen kinetics, it showed that modeling of nitrification is essential in an ecosystem model.
