Description The project aims to develop an understanding of the kinematics of the Himalayan wedge in the Darjiling-Sikkim-Tibet (DaSiT) Himalayas for the first time with particular emphasis on the hinterland kinematics by numerically modelling the formation of the Kangmar dome which was probably the dominant hinterland structure that drove the thrusting in the foreland of the DaSiT wedge. The project also looks at, for the first time, in detail at the geometry and kinematics of a transverse zone (The Gish transverse zone) in the Himalayas to try and understand how the deformation kinematics varies across these transverse zone. We propose to do this using a completely new, integrated, approach that would combine numerical modelling techniques with geological (mesoscopic and microscopic), remote sensing, GPS and earthquake hypocenter data in the back-drop of the critical wedge theory that has emerged as the present day paradigm for studying fold-and-thrust belts. Studies like the one proposed here are completely lacking from the Himalayas. We also want to investigate how the Shillong plateau is deforming from GPS measurements because we have measured the highest intra-plate velocity in the Indian plate from the Shillong plateau and want to test the deformation characteristics of the plateau in more detail in the light of present day concepts on the deformation of the plateau.
