Utilization of plant metal interactions for environmental management: from a general disbelief to universal acceptance

Description While humans are busy fouling their surroundings, it has been discovered that the plant metal interactions can be utilized for industrial and environmental benefits. It is observed that many mineralized areas often support characteristic plant species that thrive in these metal enriched environments and mineral exploration can be carried out by an interpretation of its surface vegetative cover. Some plant species can accumulate unusually high concentrations of toxic metals to levels which far exceed the soil levels-hyperaccumulators. The possibility of using these hyperaccumulators to phytoremediate contaminated soils has captured the imagination of the public and scientific community alike. Plant based cleanup strategies offer a number of advantages over traditional cleanup methods, as well as over other bioremediation technologies. Another area which has emerged from utilising plant metal interactions is phytomining which at present is very far from being established commercially. A new family of metal sorbing biomaterials appears to be on the horizon, serving as a basis for a new technology of biosorption. Plants can be an important source of trace elements for humans as it is well known that metals in soil may be taken up by the plant and thus enter the food chain. The study of this metals pathway will be useful in environmental monitoring and help in taking-up the remedial measures by the regulatory agencies. Various research areas that have emerged from plant metal interactions have been reviewed in this article.
