Description The need of promoting underground space use in urban areas has been emphasised as it helps in promoting infrastructure development that is less damaging to environment and simultaneously improves the standard of living. Environmental dimensions of underground space use include impact identification and assessment, health, safety and efficiency of workers and various legal regulatory framework as described in this paper. correlation of environmental dimensions/ parameters with various sustainability characteristics have been studied. A case record of vibration effect due to underground metro system has also been given to explain the importance of environmental impact studies.
