Description Mining is associated with polluting the environment at each stage of its progress: Open cast mines pollute more in comparison to underground mines due to the exposure of the activities to atmosphere. Out of all types of pollution, the most prevalent one is pollution due to particulate matter. Thus assessment of dust concentration is required to know its potential for health hazard. This paper highlights the purpose of sampling, the instrument to be used and their principle of operation and actual sampling procedure to be followed in open cast mines.
