Description Chemical investigation of the methanolic extract of the roots of Xanthium strumarium (compositae) has resulted in the isolation of stigmasterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), 2-methylanthraquinone (2) and stigmasterol. Although stigmasterol was reported earlier from the aerial part of his plant., but there was no report of isolation of 1 and 2 from this plant source. This is the first report of isolation of 1 and 2 from this plant with detailed spectral and chemical studies. Compound 1 though reported earlier to be present in minute quantity in a fraction containing a mixture of sterols but there was no report of its detailed spectral and chemical studies. Compound 2, even though a known compound, has not been isolated from this plant before.
