Description The occurrence and characterisation of photosynthetic sulphur bacteria in the tropical waters is reported. These were found with decaying beds of seagrass at Agatti Island, Lakshadweep, India. These were cultured and compared with the phtosynthetic bacteria. Based on the colour, cell size, ability for photoautotrophy, the purple bacteria are identified as Chromatium violescens and the green bacteria as Prosthecochloris aestuarii.
