Description This paper is a summary of the technical experience of the author, collected over 44 years of experience in laboratories, mines, visits to steel producers and in developing more economical coal blends for coke makers. The paper covers a range of matters deemed by the author to be important to the production of high quality coke at the lowest possible cost. The paper also covers some areas suggested to the author by Dr T Venugopalan. The paper suggests that there are a number of ways to reduce coal costs. These cover the choice of coal suppliers, a range of measures that may be used to reduce variability in coke quality, and ranges for coal properties that may be utilised to minimise the cost of the coal blend or iron making.
