Description Iron ore fines generate about 50-60% of total production of India’s iron ore, during mining. Slimes and mill scales are generated every year by ore washing plants and various hot working processes of steel respectively. Although huge amount of fines coal fines and coke breezes are also produced during coal mining and coking of coal respectively. These fines concentrates can’t be charged directly in ironmaking reactors. Utilization of these fines for extracting of metal is of vital concern for resource conservation and pollution control; and therefore, a novel concept of agglomeration of iron ore-coal composite briquettes/pellets by cold bonding technology is developed. Fly ash generated in India is about 170 Mt/year due to high production of thermal power. Fly ash, a pozzolan is a siliceous or siliceous/aluminous material, when mixed with lime and water, forms a cementitious compound. Various binders, such as fly ash, lime, Ca(OH)2, slaked lime, dextrin, molasses, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium polyacrylate (SPA), are used either alone or in combination in different proportions for making of iron ore-coal composite briquettes/pellets. It was possible to obtain dry strength of compressive strength more than 300 N per briquette in many cases. In briquettes, one of best result is obtained with combined binders of fly ash, slaked lime and molasses (462 N/briquette). Best results of briquettes are adopted for pelletization. Drop strength and shatter index of iron ore - coal composite briquettes/pellets are also performed. In pellets, one of best results is obtained with combined binders of fly ash, slaked lime and molasses (216 N/pellet).
