Description Transportation of highly inflammablehydrocarbons through cross country pipelines is an integral part of world's economic structure. These cross country pipelines transverse through highly environmentally-sensitive and human safety zones. Transportation of hydrocarbons using pipelines is considered as the safest mode of transport when compared to surface transport. India has a vast network of petroleum pipelines. C, orrosion is a common phenomenon related to petroleum pipelines which has concern over economics, human safety and conservation of metal resources. Indian Institute of Petroleum is being actively engaged in area of corrosion control studies pertaining to hydrocarbon industries. Corrosion inhibitors are most commonly used for the control of internal corrosion of all the long distance pipelines in India. Present studies involve the synthesis of benzimidazole compounds. These compounds were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for their corrosion inhibiting performance. Corrosion inhibition studies were carried out using uninhibit~d petroleum product viz. kerosene ITom Panipat Refinery. Corrosion inhibitor performance studies were carried out using NACE Standard Test Method NACE TM 0172-93. Among six synthesized benzimidazole compounds one compound, which is the product of o-phenyl diamine & n-hexanoic acid showed excellent performance with 'A' NACE rating as compared to other five compounds.
