Description |
A few damaged turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes pertaining to aeroengine were sent to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that the damages in these components were mainly in the form of breakage of airfoil, dent/hit marks, overheating and peeling off of thermal barrier coating. Molten and solidified aluminium metal deposits were found present on majority of the nozzle guide vanes. The damages in the components appear to be secondary in nature and would have occurred subsequent to the primary failure. Failure of the Ist stage turbine blades appears to be the first in the chain of events. The nature of damages also suggests that there was over temperature and/or fire in the engine. However, with the available information and evidences, it was not possible to establish whether the over-temperature in the engine had led to the failure of the turbine blades or vice versa. There were no evidences of progressive failure such as fatigue in any of the components examined.
