Description A great deal of new evidence relating to maritime archaeology of India has come to lime light in the recent years, both from explorations and excavations. Among them the ancient stone anchors are the key to understand history of maritime trade and commerce, cultural contacts and boat and shipbuilding activities of the region. In India, stone anchors have been reported from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Lakshadweep on the west coast and Tamil Nadu and Orissa on the east coast of India. Recent exploration has revealed an Indo-Arabian type of stone anchor at Hydross Palli Mosque near the beach of Kannur (Cannanore) city of Kerala. The anchor is lying on the southeast corner of the mosque and buried on the ground. Historical records mention that the Malabar region of Kerala had trade contacts with Arab countries since the Early Historical Period. The finding of an anchor is an evidence for Indo-Arabian trade in the Malabar region. The most important feature of the stone anchor of Kannur is that the trimming resembles with the stone anchors of Goa and Mogadishu, Kenya. The paper details the stone anchor of Kannur and tentative dates are ascribed in relation to the maritime history of the Malabar region of Kerala.
