Description The objective of this investigation is to study the bending strength of octagonal street lighting columns subjected to wind and gravity loads. Street lighting columns with octagonal cross section of 12m and 8m high with and without access hole is taken for the present study. Theoretical studies using codal provisions of EN 40-3-3, ASCE Manual No: 72 along with other literatures on bending strength of steel tubes has been carried out to find the strength of street lighting columns. A detailed Finite Element analysis is performed using finite element software NE-NASTRAN, to study the non-linear behaviour of lighting columns. Experimental studies were carried out on the full scale lighting column. The load versus strain behavior and the load versus lateral deflection behaviour was recorded in the elastic and inelastic range of loading. The full scale specimen was loaded upto destruction level upto visible buckling occurs near access hole and also reaches unsteady deflection of large magnitude for a steady load. The ultimate bending strength of the lighting columns have been analysed and compared with the theoretical and analytical investigations. Based on the above study, the influence of the presence of access hole in the bending strength of Octagonal street lighting columns has been arrived at.
